This Collection consists of 4 series that contain files from the Director's Office of the Harold B. Lee Library, meeting minutes and correspondence from various library departments and employees, information on the new addition of the library, and many reports and procedures pertaining to the library before and after the addition. The first series contains Director's office files largely made up of correspondence arranged alphabetically. It also contains correspondence regarding the new addition of the library and the Centennial celebration. The second series consists of meeting minutes and correspondence from various library committees and departments, including the Administrative Council, Haybron Adams, and the LRC committees. The third series is made up of documents relating to the new addition to the library. This includes promotional material such as overheads, audio tracks, and copies of speeches made at the dedication. Also present are general reports and proposals relating to the organization of library departments. The last series is made up of reports and procedures from various library departments and committees. A large portion of this consists of CAP reports and interim reports.

Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. In 1966 the Graduate Department of Library and Information Sciences was unveiled giving Brigham Young students the opportunity to receive a masters degree in library science.
